Roman Geography

Rome is located in a hilly area in the Italian Peninula. The Alps and Apennines (mountains that run through the Italian Peninsula) provided a natural barrier. Although these mountains were a big part of how Rome survived for 100s of years, they also impeded growth and movement of the Roman Empire. The Medditerean Sea was another way of protection for Rome. The Med. Sea made way for many trade roues, one through each known empire of the time. The Med. Sea gave Rome a source of food, and easy military movement. The Tober River, a river running through Rome (blue line on the map), gave an easier way to export and import trade. The Tiber acted as a shortcut to the Med. Sea.
